The Sun representing planetary combustion in Vedic astrology

Combustion of Planets (Astanga): When Planets Get Too Close to the Sun

In Vedic astrology, when a planet comes too close to the Sun in a birth chart, it is traditionally said to become "combust" or astanga. This condition is believed to weaken the planet's ability to deliver its natural significations, as the Sun's intense energy is thought to overpower it.

What Is Combustion?

Combustion occurs when a planet is positioned within a specific number of degrees from the Sun in a birth chart. Because the Sun is the brightest celestial body, planets that come too close to it are traditionally believed to lose their visibility and, symbolically, their strength and independence.

The concept is rooted in the astronomical observation that planets near the Sun become invisible to the naked eye, overwhelmed by the Sun's brilliance. In Vedic astrology, this physical phenomenon is interpreted as the planet losing its ability to fully express its qualities.

Combustion Degrees for Each Planet

Classical Vedic texts specify the following proximity thresholds within which a planet is traditionally considered combust:

  • Moon: Within 12° of the Sun
  • Mars: Within 17° of the Sun
  • Mercury: Within 14° of the Sun (12° if retrograde)
  • Jupiter: Within 11° of the Sun
  • Venus: Within 10° of the Sun (8° if retrograde)
  • Saturn: Within 15° of the Sun

Note that Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes) are not subject to combustion, as they are shadow planets without a physical body.

Effects of Combustion

When a planet is combust in a birth chart, it is traditionally believed to produce effects such as:

  • Weakened significations: The houses and karakatvas (natural significations) ruled by the combust planet may not deliver their full results.
  • Ego conflicts: The Sun represents ego and authority, so combustion is sometimes interpreted as the planet's qualities being overshadowed by ego-related issues.
  • Delayed results: Rather than completely denying outcomes, combustion may indicate delays or struggles in the areas governed by that planet.
  • Health considerations: Some traditions associate combustion with health vulnerabilities related to the combust planet's karakatva.

When Combustion Is Less Harmful

Not all combustion is traditionally considered equally detrimental. Several factors may reduce its negative impact:

  • Retrograde combust planets: A retrograde planet that is combust is sometimes considered less afflicted, as retrogression is believed to add a degree of strength.
  • Exalted combust planets: If the combust planet is in its sign of exaltation, its inherent strength may partially offset the effects of combustion.
  • Friendly relationship with the Sun: Planets that are natural friends of the Sun (such as Jupiter and Mars) are traditionally considered less harmed by combustion than its enemies.
  • Wide orb: The closer a planet is to the Sun, the more severe the combustion is believed to be. A planet at the edge of the combustion range may experience milder effects.

Remedies

In the Vedic tradition, several remedies are suggested for combust planets, though their efficacy is a matter of personal belief:

  • Mantra recitation: Chanting the beej mantra or Vedic mantra associated with the combust planet is traditionally recommended.
  • Gemstone therapy: Wearing the gemstone of the combust planet (after proper consultation) is believed by some to strengthen its energy.
  • Charity and fasting: Performing charitable acts on the day associated with the combust planet is a commonly suggested remedy.
  • Strengthening the planet: Engaging in activities and behaviors that align with the combust planet's positive significations may help, according to traditional practice.
