What each koot measures
Muhurta Chintamani sets out the eight koots in its marriage chapter (Ch.6) and gives them 1 to 8 points, 36 in all. Every koot compares the two Moons at birth, by sign or by nakshatra. The rule on each card is the text's; the last line is how astrologers read it today.
Varna
Each Moon sign belongs to one of four varna groups. This classifies the sign, not anyone's family. The point is given when the groom's group is the same as the bride's or comes before it in that order.
Read as: outlook and temperament.
Vashya
Moon signs fall into five groups: human, four-legged, water, wild and insect. The points depend on how readily one group draws or yields to the other.
Read as: mutual pull and influence.
Tara
Count the nakshatras from one Moon to the other and divide by nine. Remainders of 3, 5 and 7 are the troubled ones, and the count runs both ways.
Read as: wellbeing and fortune together.
Yoni
Each nakshatra has an animal. The same animal scores full; natural enemies, such as cat and rat or mongoose and serpent, score nothing.
Read as: physical and instinctive match.
Graha Maitri
Compares the lords of the two Moon signs: friends, neutral or enemies by the natural planetary friendships.
Read as: mental wavelength.
Gana
Each nakshatra is Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa. The same gana is best, Deva with Manushya is middling, and Rakshasa with either of the others is the hardest pairing.
Read as: temperament.
Bhakoot
Counts the two Moon signs from each other. The text marks three pairings as troubled: 2-12, 5-9 and 6-8. Every other pairing scores the full 7.
Read as: family life, children and money.
Nadi
Each nakshatra is Adi, Madhya or Antya Nadi. Different Nadis score 8; the same Nadi scores 0, the heaviest dosha in the table.
Read as: health and children.
What 18 out of 36 means
No classical text sets a pass mark. 18, half of 36, is the convention most astrologers and panchangs follow, and the result above uses these bands: under 18 is below the usual minimum, 18 to 23.5 is good, 24 to 27.5 is very good, and 28 or more is excellent.
The total is never read alone. Muhurta Chintamani (Ch.6) follows the koot rules with exceptions (parihara) for a troubled Bhakoot or Nadi, and astrologers check both partners for Manglik dosha. That is why the result shows every koot and both Manglik readings, not just the total.
Manglik dosha in a match
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch.80 Sl.47) forms Manglik dosha when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna (the Sanskrit names the Lagna itself, though some English translations drop it) with no benefic, meaning a naturally gentle planet (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or a waxing Moon), joining or aspecting it. Sl.48-49 add that when both the groom and the bride have it, it ceases to have effect.

How many points are needed for a good kundli match?
By convention, at least 18 out of 36. No classical text fixes that number; it is the rule most astrologers and panchangs follow. 18 to 23.5 is read as good, 24 to 27.5 as very good and 28 or more as excellent. The total is read together with Nadi, Bhakoot and both partners' Manglik status.
Can I do kundli matching by name only?
Name matching takes a nakshatra from the first syllable of each name. It is an old fallback for when birth details are missing. This calculator does not take names: it works out each person's actual Moon nakshatra and sign from their date, time and place of birth.
Do I need the exact time of birth?
Gun Milan is read from the Moon at birth, and the Moon changes nakshatra about once a day, so a few hours' difference often leaves the score unchanged. On a day when the Moon is changing nakshatra or sign, it can change it. Manglik dosha is read from the Lagna, which changes every two hours, so it needs the right time.
What is Nadi dosha, and when is it not counted?
When the groom and bride share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), the Nadi koot scores 0 of 8. Tradition gives exceptions: the two Moons share a sign but sit in different nakshatras, or share a nakshatra in a different sign or pada. Then most astrologers do not count it as a dosha, though the points stay at 0.
When is Manglik dosha cancelled?
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch.80) gives two cases: a benefic planet (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or a waxing Moon) joins or aspects Mars (Sl.47), or both the groom and the bride have the dosha (Sl.48-49). The result above names the reason in plain words for each person.
Does a low score mean the relationship won't work?
No. Gun Milan is the traditional comparison of two Moons, not a verdict on a relationship. Astrologers read it with both full charts: the 7th house and its lord, Venus, the Navamsa and the dasha each person is running.
