How to read your kundli
Read a kundli in this order: the lagna first, then the houses, the planets, the Moon, the running dasha and Saturn's transit. Each step names the classical text it comes from.
Start with the lagna
The lagna is the sign rising in the east when you were born. In the North Indian chart it sits in the top centre diamond, which is always house 1; the other houses follow counter-clockwise. The small number in each house is its sign, 1 for Aries through 12 for Pisces. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS, Ch.11) reads body, looks, temperament and general happiness from the lagna.
Know what each house covers
BPHS (Ch.11) gives each house its own part of life:
- Self, body and nature
- Wealth, family and food
- Courage, siblings and short journeys
- Mother, home, vehicles and land
- Children, learning and intelligence
- Rivals, illness and maternal uncle
- Spouse, travel and trade
- Longevity and inheritance
- Fortune, dharma and pilgrimage
- Work, status and honour
- Income and gains
- Expenses
A planet sitting in a house colours that part of life. The house lord, the planet that rules the sign in that house, links the house's matters to wherever it sits; BPHS Ch.24 gives the result of each house lord in each house.
Check how strong each planet is
BPHS (Ch.3, v.49-50) gives each planet a sign of exaltation, where it is strongest, and a sign of debilitation, the opposite sign, where it is weakest. A planet in its exaltation sign gives its good results in full, in its own sign about half, and in its debilitation sign very little (Ch.3, v.59-60).

Read the Moon as a second lagna
Your Moon sign (rashi) is the sign daily rashifal is read from, and BPHS (Ch.12, v.11) says to judge the chart from the Moon as well as from the lagna. The Moon's nakshatra decides which planet your dasha cycle starts with (BPHS Ch.46, v.12-14), and transits are counted from the Moon sign (Phaladeepika Ch.26).
Find the dasha you are in
Vimshottari dasha splits a 120-year cycle among nine planets: Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7 and Venus 20 (BPHS Ch.46, v.15). The mahadasha lord sets the main theme of those years and the antardasha lord the theme within it. A dasha gives results in line with its lord's strength (BPHS Ch.47, v.3), so find your mahadasha lord in the planet table above and check its sign against step 3 and its house against step 2.
Read Sade Sati with the dasha
Sade Sati is the traditional name for Saturn's roughly seven-and-a-half-year passage through the sign before your Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the sign after it. Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita (Ch.104, v.39-40 and 45) counts each of these as a demanding transit, and the same chapter (v.46) adds that a transit gives only what the running dasha allows. So read Sade Sati together with your dasha, never on its own.

What is a kundli?
A kundli (janam kundli, birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It shows your lagna (rising sign) and where the nine Vedic planets, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, sat across the 12 signs and 12 houses. Vedic astrology reads temperament, life areas and timing from it.
What do I need to make my kundli?
Your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth. The time matters most: the lagna changes about every two hours, and every house moves with it. If you're unsure of your birth time, check a birth certificate or hospital record before relying on the houses.
Is this kundli free? Do I need to sign up?

Why does my kundli look different on another website?
Usually the birth time or time zone differs, which moves the lagna and the houses. The zodiac can differ too: this chart uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsa, the convention Indian panchangs follow, while a Western (tropical) chart places each planet about 24° further on, often in the next sign.
What is the difference between the rashi chart (D1) and navamsa (D9)?
The rashi chart (D1), shown on this page, is the main birth chart. The navamsa (D9) divides each sign into nine parts and is read for marriage and for how much strength each planet really has. You can see your D9 in the Om.AI app and web chat.
