How the dates are counted

A Sade Sati begins the day Saturn first enters the 12th sign from your Moon and ends the day it settles in the 3rd. Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months every year, and near a sign boundary it steps back into the sign it just left. When the step back stays within the three signs, an earlier phase runs again (marked "Again"). When it takes Saturn out of them, the Sade Sati pauses. Either way it is the same Sade Sati, not a new one.

What Sade Sati and Dhaiya are

Vedic astrology reads Saturn's transits from the sign the Moon was in when you were born, not from the Sun sign (Phaladeepika Ch.26 Sl.1; Brihat Samhita Ch.104 v.4). Sade Sati, "seven and a half", is the stretch when Saturn passes through three signs in a row: the 12th from your Moon, the Moon's own sign, and the 2nd. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each, so the three come to roughly seven and a half years.

What the classical texts say

Brihat Samhita's chapter on transits (Ch.104) describes Saturn in the 12th from the Moon as a time of grief (v.45), over the Moon as a time of hardship, distance from family, travel far from home and loss (v.39), and in the 2nd as a time of less comfort and energy, with money that doesn't stay (v.40). The same chapter counts Saturn as helpful in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon (v.4), which is why a Sade Sati ends once Saturn settles in the 3rd.

Where the name comes from

None of the classical texts we work from (BPHS, Brihat Jataka, Phaladeepika, Brihat Samhita) uses the name Sade Sati or treats the three signs as one seven-and-a-half-year period. That grouping is a later tradition built on the transit verses. We follow it because it's how people ask the question, and we date it from Saturn's actual sign changes rather than a flat 7.5 years.

Dhaiya: Kantaka and Ashtama Shani

Dhaiya, "two and a half", is Saturn's spell in the 4th or the 8th sign from the Moon. In the 4th it is called Kantaka Shani, after Kantaka, the classical name for the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses (Brihat Jataka Ch.1 Sl.17); Brihat Samhita links it to distance from friends, money and spouse, and an unsettled mind (Ch.104 v.42). In the 8th it is Ashtama Shani, which the same chapter links to time apart from spouse and children, and hard journeys (v.44).

How much of it you feel

These verses describe the transit for everyone with your Moon sign. How it lands in one life depends on the rest of the chart: the dasha running, the houses Saturn crosses from your lagna, and what Saturn rules for you. BPHS Ch.34 counts Saturn as an auspicious planet for Taurus, Libra and Aquarius lagnas. Hard years are real for many people, and they also end, which is why the dates matter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Sade Sati by date of birth?

Enter your date of birth and city in the calculator at the top of this page, and your birth time if you know it. It works out the sign the Moon was in when you were born, then tells you whether Sade Sati or Dhaiya is running for that sign today, which phase it is in, and when it ends. If you already know your Moon sign (rashi), the table lists the dates directly.

Is Sade Sati counted from the Moon sign or the lagna?

From the Moon sign. Vedic astrology reads transits from the natal Moon (Phaladeepika Ch.26 Sl.1), so everyone with the same Moon sign shares the same Sade Sati dates, whatever their lagna. The lagna still matters for how the years play out, because it decides which houses of your chart Saturn passes through.

When will Sade Sati end for Aquarius, Pisces and Aries?

Aquarius (Kumbh): 23 Feb 2028. Pisces (Meen): 17 Apr 2030. Aries (Mesh): 31 May 2032. The next Sade Sati to begin is for Taurus (Vrishabh), on 3 Jun 2027, and it runs to 13 Jul 2034.

What is the difference between Sade Sati and Dhaiya?

Sade Sati is Saturn's run through three signs, the 12th from your Moon, the Moon's own sign and the 2nd, about seven and a half years in all. Dhaiya is one sign, about two and a half years: Saturn 4th from the Moon (Kantaka Shani) or 8th from it (Ashtama Shani). Leo (Singh) and Sagittarius (Dhanu) have Dhaiya from 29 Mar 2025 to 23 Feb 2028, with a break from 3 Jun to 20 Oct 2027.

Why does my Sade Sati show a phase twice, or a pause?

Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months every year, and near a sign boundary it steps back into the sign it just left. Saturn enters Aries on 3 Jun 2027, steps back into Pisces on 20 Oct 2027 and returns to Aries on 23 Feb 2028, so some phases run twice. If the step back takes Saturn outside the three Sade Sati signs, the Sade Sati pauses. Either way it is the same Sade Sati, not a new one.

Is Sade Sati always a bad time?

Not for everyone. Classical transit verses describe Saturn in these signs as a hard stretch, with strain, expense and worry, and many people do feel it that way. How much of it shows in one life depends on the whole chart: the dasha running, the houses Saturn crosses from your lagna, and what Saturn rules for you. BPHS Ch.34 counts Saturn as an auspicious planet for Taurus, Libra and Aquarius lagnas. The period also has a fixed end date, which the calculator gives you.
