Planetary Aspects (Drishti) in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology, aspects — known as Drishti (meaning "glance" or "sight") — describe how planets influence houses and other planets from a distance. Understanding aspects is believed to be essential for reading a birth chart, as they reveal connections and influences that go beyond simple house placement.

What Are Aspects (Drishti)?

In Vedic astrology, every planet casts its "glance" on certain houses counted from its own position. Unlike Western astrology, which uses degree-based aspects between planets, Vedic astrology uses a house-based (sign-based) system where planets aspect entire houses.

An aspect is traditionally considered a way a planet extends its influence beyond the house it physically occupies. When a planet aspects a house, it is believed to influence the matters of that house and any planets placed there — for better or worse, depending on the nature of the aspecting planet.

The 7th House Aspect (All Planets)

Every planet in Vedic astrology has a full aspect on the 7th house from its position — that is, the house directly opposite it in the chart. This is the universal aspect that all planets share.

For example, if Jupiter is in the 1st house, it aspects the 7th house with its standard 7th-house aspect. If Saturn is in the 3rd house, it aspects the 9th house (7 houses away). This 7th-house aspect is traditionally considered to carry the full strength of the planet's influence.

Special Aspects of Mars, Jupiter & Saturn

In addition to the standard 7th-house aspect, three planets have special additional aspects that are unique to them:

  • Mars — 4th and 8th house aspects: Mars aspects the 4th and 8th houses from its position (in addition to the 7th). This is traditionally linked to Mars's aggressive and penetrating nature, giving it influence over a wider range of houses.
  • Jupiter — 5th and 9th house aspects: Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th houses from its position (in addition to the 7th). These are Trikona (trinal) houses, traditionally associated with fortune and dharma — fitting for Jupiter's role as the great benefic.
  • Saturn — 3rd and 10th house aspects: Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th houses from its position (in addition to the 7th). The 3rd and 10th are houses of effort and karma, aligning with Saturn's traditional association with hard work and discipline.

These special aspects are traditionally given full strength, meaning the planet influences these additional houses just as powerfully as it does through its standard 7th-house aspect.

How Aspects Modify Results

The effect of an aspect depends heavily on the nature of the aspecting planet:

  • Benefic aspects: Aspects from natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, well-associated Mercury, and the waxing Moon) are traditionally believed to enhance and protect the houses and planets they touch.
  • Malefic aspects: Aspects from natural malefics (Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu) are traditionally considered to create challenges, delays, or intensity in the aspected house.
  • Functional nature: A planet's functional role (based on house lordship for the specific ascendant) may modify whether its aspect is beneficial or challenging.
  • Mutual aspects: When two planets aspect each other, they are believed to create a stronger connection — potentially forming yogas or intensifying each other's influence.

Reading Aspects in Your Chart

To effectively read aspects in a birth chart, consider these traditionally recommended steps:

  • Identify all aspects on each house: For every house, determine which planets are casting their aspect on it. This gives a complete picture of the influences acting on that area of life.
  • Note special aspects: Pay particular attention to the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, as they extend these planets' influence much further than other planets.
  • Weigh benefic vs malefic: A house receiving aspects from both benefic and malefic planets may show mixed results — growth accompanied by challenges.
  • Consider aspect combinations: Multiple aspects on a single house or planet create a layered influence that should be read together rather than in isolation.
