Kundli Matching & Ashtakoot Guide: How Compatibility Works

Kundli matching (also called Kundali Milan or horoscope matching) is a traditional Vedic practice used to assess marriage compatibility. The most popular method is Ashtakoot Milan — an 8-point matching system that scores compatibility out of 36 points.

The 8 Koots Explained

#	Koot	Points	What It Measures
1	Varna	1	Spiritual temperament and work-nature compatibility. Based on classical categories that reflect innate qualities, not social hierarchy.
2	Vashya	2	Mutual attraction and influence between partners.
3	Tara	3	Birth star compatibility, health and well-being of the couple.
4	Yoni	4	Physical and sexual compatibility, based on animal symbols of nakshatras.
5	Graha Maitri	5	Mental compatibility based on Moon sign lords' friendship.
6	Gana	6	Temperament matching — Deva (calm, spiritual), Manushya (practical, balanced), Rakshasa (independent, intense). These are personality archetypes, not moral labels.
7	Bhakoot	7	Emotional compatibility, wealth and health prospects of the couple.
8	Nadi	8	Constitutional and health compatibility (traditionally assessed). Carries the highest weight. Same Nadi = Nadi Dosha.

How to Interpret Scores

• Below 12: Below average — significant challenges likely.
• 12-17: Average compatibility, remedies recommended.
• 18-23: Good compatibility.
• 24-27: Very good match.
• 28 and above: Excellent match.
